Comprehensive Grammar Resources

In this series we aim at making the analytical results of grammatical research that have multiplied in the explosive growth of the linguistic research of the past decades available in a systematic way in the form of large (multivolume) scientific grammars of specific languages. The scientific quality of these grammar resources will be jointly guaranteed by the series editors Henk van Riemsdijk, István Kenesei and Hans Broekhuis and the publishing house Amsterdam University Press.

With the appearance of the seventh volume of the Syntax of Dutch, authored by Hans Broekhuis and several collaborators, the first of these grammars is nearing completion – an eighth and last volume is expected to appear in 2019. The Syntax of Dutch marks a giant leap forward in grammar writing. It makes available a wealth of information about the structure of the Dutch language in ways that are not hidden behind or obscured by the theorizing of the primary literature. The information contained in these grammar books is many times richer than the information contained in more traditional grammars. These volumes are published, both as hardcover books and electronically, in English and thereby accessible to the international linguistic community.

The first two volumes on the Syntax of Hungarian, Nouns and Noun Phrases, edited by Gábor Alberti and Tibor Laczkó have been published in 2017. These books aim to present a synthesis of the currently available syntactic knowledge of the Hungarian language, rooted in theory but providing highly detailed descriptions, and intended to be of use to researchers as well as advanced students of language and linguistics.

Projects are under way to achieve similarly extensive scientific works of grammar on Mandarin Chinese and a number of other languages.
