About Amsterdam University Press
Amsterdam University Press (AUP) is a publishing company that specialises in leading works of non-fiction for academics and generally interested readers. AUP is distinguished by its open, creative and internationally oriented attitude and by its critical engagement. With its publications, the publishing company also aims to stimulate societal debate. AUP connects authors with readers through an international network of distributors and partners. In this way, it forms a global source of knowledge and inspiration.
The goal is to spread academic knowledge swiftly and effectively, in both the general and the academic markets. In addition, quality of content and a focus on the customer play key roles. More than fifteen highly qualified and experienced professionals work at AUP, providing authors, partners and customers with a dedicated and individual service.
AUP has more than twenty years of experience in providing customers with high-quality scholarly publications. The publishing company has built up a catalogue of more than 1,600 English and Dutch-language titles. Over 80 new academic monographs are published every year, including in the areas of European History, Asian Studies, Contemporary Society, Film & Media and Linguistics. The number of AUP journals is also growing steadily. At present, AUP publishes fifteen academic journals in the area of the humanities and social sciences. All scholarly publications are subject to a stringent peer-review process.
Publishing for a wide audience
AUP is successfully increasing its focus on the distribution of knowledge on issues that are of interest to a wide audience. The authors of AUP books for the general market – more than fifty of which are published each year – combine academic depth with an accessible writing style, even when addressing complex subjects.
AUP makes its publishing expertise available to third parties, by advising on publication policy, editing texts, and arranging printing and typesetting for academic institutions and individual academics.
For example, AUP works closely with partners such as the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), the EYE Film Institute, the Dutch Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR), the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) and the University of Amsterdam.
AUP employs the newest digital technologies. AUP’s publications appear both in print and digitally, and are sold in Asia, Australasia, Europe and North America through an extensive international network of agents and distributors. Important partners include the National Book Network, JSTOR and Nielsen Bookdata, among many others. Chicago University Press is responsible for the distribution, marketing and sales of AUP publications in the United States and Canada.
AUP has long been a wholehearted supporter of the idea of Open Access and releases many academic books and journals for Open Access directly after publication. To this end, it works closely with platforms such as OAPEN Library and Ingenta.
